Venture Acceleration Fund

The Venture Acceleration Fund (VAF) makes investments in early-stage and growth-stage businesses. Established in 2006 as a grant program by Los Alamos National Laboratory LANL), VAF changed in 2014 to include funding payback that is triggered by defined conditions. Under the new protocol, VAF is structured as an interest-free loan, with repayment only if a company is acquired, achieves certain revenue goals or leaves New Mexico within a specified time frame. While VAF is largely funded by Los Alamos National Laboratory and other economic development organizations, which contribute to the total amount available. Our core support to the community is a focus on opiate addiction and recovery. These and many other services are provided by Inside Out, all FREE OF CHARGE!

We serve the community by offering food boxes, clothing bank, hygiene kits, dog food all free of charge to homeless and indigent clients.We offer a weekly acupuncture clinic to the community and we are hoping to resume that soon. With the COVID changes of course we could not do that since early March. We are hoping to resume soon. We do a homeless outreach on the streets of Taos and will resume that on June 1. Our agency offers peer support through Certified Peer Support Worker.
We offer NARCAN trainings and distribute NARCAN free of charge. We also offer weekly jail groups to both men and women in Taos. We have not been able to do this due to COVID, but hope to resume this when we are allowed.
We also assist those who are returning from incarceration. All services are free of charge to the community. We receive and also do referrals with multiple agencies to assist people with their needs including medical, judicial and other providers of service.

Job Training Incentive Program
New Mexico has one of the most generous training incentive programs in the country. The Job Training Incentive Program (JTIP) funds classroom and on-the-job training for newly-created jobs in expanding or relocating businesses for up to 6 months. The program reimburses 50-75% of employee wages. Custom training at a New Mexico public educational institution may also be reimbursed.

Who Qualifies: Eligibility for JTIP funds depends on the company’s business, the role of the newly-created jobs in that business, and the trainees themselves. Please read through the eligibility guidelines (see Policy and Procedures below) and then fill out the Eligibility Questionnaire to begin the JTIP application process. A member of JTIP staff will contact you to determine your company’s eligibility and discuss the program in detail.

The New Mexico Small Business Development Center (NMSBDC) Network was established in 1989 through a partnership with the US Small Business Administration, the State of New Mexico, the New Mexico Association of Community Colleges, and the New Mexico Association of Independent Community Colleges. The Taos Education & Career Center (TECC) considers education to be a basic human right throughout the lifespan of a human being. We work with adults and youth, at least 16 years of age, to improve their academic skills in order to:

* Discover and prepare for a career that is meaningful and financially supportive.
*Obtain a High School Equivalency (GED® or HiSET) and prepare for the college entrance exam (ACT Compass®) via College and Career Readiness Classes (CCRS).
*Communicate fluently in English.

Taos Elders and Neighbors Together (TENT) is a nonprofit 502(c)(3) tax-exempt community of elders and neighbors supporting one another. It is a virtual village with a volunteer-based support network that connects members to various resources needed for them to live comfortable, dignified and vibrant lives in their own homes as they age. The goal of TEN is grass roots economic development through Network Facilitation, use of volunteer time – neighbor helping neighbor and effective use of readily available resources. The activities to achieve these goals are:
*Awareness. This outreach component is aimed at promoting awareness of entrepreneurship throughout the community in an effort to enhance our entrepreneurial culture, generate client inquiries, and recruit volunteers.

*One-on-one client orientation and coaching. The orientation and coaching component is aimed at listening to and assessing the client’s business, strategy, and goals; identifying strategic needs; orienting the client to available services; networking them with the most relevant assistance; and providing on-going coaching to the client.

*Social Capital. The networking component is the core element of the model, upon which effectiveness, results and sustainability are dependent. The networking element involves establishing a network of regional advisors from a variety of industries and professions, who can lend their knowledge and experience to the challenges faced by the entrepreneur.

The Downtown Taos MainStreet project (DTMS) is an independent, local nonprofit, committed to facilitating a shared vision for our downtown by encouraging economic vitality and celebrating Taos’ cultural and historical assets. After a year of working through a rigorous state accelerator program, DTMS obtained its full MainStreet designation from the state and federal programs.

Taxpayer Advocate
The Taxpayer Advocacy Program is designed to provide assistance to taxpayers working with the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department, identify systemic problems within the Department, and recommend long term solutions to solving those problems.

The taxpayer advocate can assist in resolving issues when the normal process has broken down. The taxpayer advocate will ensure that the rights afforded to the taxpayer in the Taxpayer Bill of Rights are protected.

What the taxpayer advocate can do:
Provide assistance to those who have tried to operate within the normal Departmental channels
Coordinate communications between you and the department
Ensure your rights under the Taxpayer Bill of Rights are being upheld
Advocate for a resolution of your issue on your behalf
Identify systemic problems
Recommend long-term solutions
What the taxpayer advocate cannot do:
Provide relief or remedy not provided by law
Act as the first contact with the department
Reverse decisions made by the Administrative Hearing Office
Handle issues at the IRS

Taos’ community college, UNM-Taos offers certificate and two-year associate degrees with support to transfer to four-year programs and workforce. Youth Heartline focuses on child advocacy through a variety of services in Colfax, Taos, and Union counties as well as the Taos Pueblo including: 1) providing volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for foster children; 2) parenting education for families impacted by substance use based in the Nurturing Parenting Program’s curriculum; 3) family empowerment activities including Girls Circle and Boys Council for those aged 12-18; and 4) Safe Exchange Supervised Visitation (SESV) for non-custodial guardians to safely spend time with their children. All of our services emphasize harm reduction and are evidence-based and trauma-informed.
